Nobody knows exactly where the birthstone tradition came from, but many biblical scholars and anthropologists seem to believe that their original assignments came from the symbolism on Aaron's chest. Aaron's shield was a unique ritual garment inlaid with twelve precious stones. They corresponded to the twelve months of the year and the twelve months of the zodiac.

But since the time before Christ, there have been many different systems for determining which birthstones belong to which month. Below is a breakdown of the birthstones as each month is assigned to different cultures and beliefs.

January -

If you were born in January, almost all traditions, including modern North American ones, name agate as your birthstone. Agate is the stone of this month in the Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions. In the ancient Hindu tradition, the stone for January is the Snake Stone. No one is quite sure what a snake stone actually is, but it is most likely a ruby, symbolizing the snake's sparkling red eyes.

Regarding the signs of the zodiac, if you were born from January 1 to January 22, you were born under the sign of Capricorn and your birthstone would be a sapphire! . If you were born after the 23rd, your sign is Aquarius and your zodiac birthstone will be garnet.

February -

If you were born in February, your birthstone is amethyst according to almost every tradition, including modern North American, Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions. In ancient Hinduism, it was one of the many Indian birthstones that we do not know about today. It was called Chandrakant.

Regarding zodiac signs, if you were born before February 22nd, you belong to the sign of Aquarius and your star stone will be garnet. If you were born at the age of 23 and belong to Pisces, then your zodiac gemstone will be the same month as your birth - amethyst!

March -

Birthstones are a little different in March. The talking stone of North America for this month is peridot. But in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish, and Russian traditions it is bloodstone. In the ancient Hindu tradition, it was a stone unknown to us today, which is called gold Shivalinga.

If you were born before March 22nd, you belong to Pisces and your birthstone will be amethyst. If you were born after March 22nd, your zodiac sign, then you belong to Aries and your gemstone will be bloodstone.
